90th Anniversary of Song Festival
This year Lithuania celebrates Song Festival 90th Anniversary. The first Song Day was held on the 23rd and 25th of August 1924 in Kaunas, the Exhibitions' Square. 86 choirs (around 3000 singers) participated. Since then, the song festivals in Lithuania are organized regularly and have become a national cultural phenomenon. On the 7th of November 2003, UNESCO proclaimed the tradition of the Song and Dance Celebration in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. In 2008 it was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Choral conductor, educator, long-time organizer of the song festivals Juozas Mikutavičius said that the main engine of Song Festival is an infinite love for their homeland, as one here is not talking about himself, he talks about the song.
Remembering the first Song Day you are welcome to look at the plot of "The Third Lithuanian Agricultural and Industrial Exhibition. 1st Lithuanian Song Festival".
